Report on-board Mistress
We saw a big lift in the tides today, i had heard reports further up the coast of some large hauls the day previous. so with that in mind we headed an hour up the coast to work some rough ground. we were pushing tide all the way which was frustrating, my nerves were jangling with excitement at the prospect of some good fishing for the lads from Derby on their 1st boat fishing trip. the trip was well worth the effort the fishing was fantastic! the fishing slowed off a bit inshore so we pushed further offshore to scout round another patch of ground, this fished even better! each drift was producing three fish per angler, all on shads and light tackle! it was manic running round with the net for the lads! finally calling it a day the lads were more than happy with their with their catch, it was a perfect day at sea, it was flat, sun shining all day and loads of fish! pictured, the lads with some of their catch . . . .

What a glorious day to be at sea! with a lift in the tides today, we were going to be working the rough ground and dropping onto the wrecks around slack water when the drift slowed down.

I ventured out to some ground 10 miles away from whitby today as i left it the day preiously with plenty of feed marks showing on the sounder. on arrival we found the feed had dispersed with only small patches showing. we managed a a few cod and a solitary haddock before moving. i worked my way round to the back end of some ground around 8 miles from whitby, we hit jackpot here, we had loads of cod mostly in the 4-6lb bracket, a few a bit bigger, the biggest fell to Mick Patterson which was a beauty weighing in at 13 1/2 lb, taking 2nd in the daily winners spot in the festival bagging him £30! Well done Mick! -

We were working a a productive patch of ground the day previous, each drift was throwing up a good number of fish, all in the 4-6lb bracket. so my intention was to get back out there and give it another go. unfortunately the wind had swung and increased in the night and lifted the sea putting a bit of motion in the water, which had coloured it slightly. we started out taking a couple of fish but not in the numbers we had seen the day previous. so i pushed a bit further a field looking for clearer water, with a couple of marks up my sleeve we worked on plucking a few fish here and there. the strength of the wind meant we were drifting at quite a rate, covering lots of ground. around lunch time the wind fell away and the sea fell flat calm. we carried on working ground and came across a a big ball of fish, there were a few boats working the area so that soon depleted, but we took a good few fish there. around slack water we moved to a patch that was chucking a few fish up each drift which continued, we managed cod and ling both in the 11lb bracket, but we lost a monster off that patch of ground! but hey ho thats fishing! we finished off at the end of the day with a reasonable catch, the lads leaving happy with their efforts, pictures is Patrick Crehan with his best cod, going 11lb on the scales.

This was our first day fishing the Summer festival, the lads were full of high expectations for the day. First thing in the morning we were greeted with a lumpy sea, but with a decreasing forecast we set off in search of the big one!.

Unfortunately due to the conditions a couple lads gave in to the dreaded sea flu, but carried on fishing regardless. By lunch time though the sea had fell right away and the sun had come out. we took a steady picking of cod and ling through the day the best one landed was by our crew man Joe who took 5 mins out to drop a line on a wreck, it was a lovely cod around 12 lb. -

Report on-board Flamer IV
JUlY 2011 - Maple Cross Deep Sea Anglers club headed by Terry Crilly joined Flamer IV for a wrecking trip for cod and pollack. After a team talk and making sure they had all the correct tackle prepared we set off.Just over 2 hours later we arrived at the chosen wreck which had fished really well the day before.Well the fishing was slow to start with with a few small cod and pollack being landed.I told the lads to stick at it and as it did the day before as the tide eased up the big cod began to feed.Dan Gomm landed the first and biggest cod of the day which weighed 22Ib 8oz.Dan is pictured with his personal best cod catch. Then Billy Birchell and Kevin Pyle joined in with 18 pounders.Dan Gomm was at it again with a 14Ib cod.The other Members also caught cod along with some pollack. But poor old Terry only caught two pollack despite all his efforts(better luck next time Terry). All the fish were caught on mainly rhubarb and custard or blue sidewinder lures. The lads really enjoyed their trip and have already booked a few for 2012.

June Catch Report,
View Boats Page
June got off to a windy start with winds of 20mph from the West and swinging round to the North and
Northeast for the weekend.
Thursday the 2nd was the best day so far this year and gave us a chance to try the wrecks,
Fishing was steady with the best of the Codlings being around the 9lb mark, 89 in total between 9 anglers, the best fish of the day was caught by Peter Downs a 6lb Wolf fish or Catfish if you prefer which Peter returned alive.
The Mackerel are so prolific that anglers are having trouble getting past them to get on the wrecks, any small
traces such as daylights and hokkis are ineffective unless they are heavily baited with Mackerel or squid strips to get past the Mackerel. Shads fished on a flowing trace, have also fished well.
Tuesday 7th
With the wind to increase from the southeast in the afternoon we tried the wrecks first thing.
Best fish was caught by was caught by Paul Nichol he had a Cod well over 10lb and a Ling over 12lb and to finish off the day he caught a 13lb Cod off the hard ground (see photos)
Weekend 11th and 12th
With winter like conditions 8 mph Northerly and 8 degrees temp the Apton SAC braved the conditions and managed to catch 10 Codlings apiece between 3lb to 5lb being the best.
On the Sunday the weather moderated for the Currock SAC from Carlisle who fished the wrecks, the quantity of fish was not as good as the ground fishing but they were a better stamp of fish, the best fish was a Ling 8.3/4 lb caught by Doug Hutchinson followed by Mal Walker with an 8 lb Ling best Codling was caught by Graham Proud and weighed 71/2 lb (see photo).
Weekend 18th and 19th
The Dalston SAC fished the hard ground and a few wrecks the best fish was a Pollack of 7 ½ lb caught by
Les McVity and his brother had three codlings on the same trace for a total of 13lb (see photos).
Weekend 25th And 26th
The Maggie Mays SAC from Carlisle had a good days fishing on the ground South of Coquet Island
With all the anglers having !0 codlings apiece to take home all caught on mostly cooked prawns.
On the 26th Angling correspondent Phill Williams from Boat Angler joined Steven Muir and his party.
Phill was compiling an article for the magazine about Amble and after a slow start the fish started to feed on the wrecks on the turn of the tide, there were some decent cod around the 5lb to 7lb and a few ling to around 7lb.There were quite a few small ling returned to get the fish down the bladders are popped as to whether they survive is unknown. Total catch was around 70 cod and ling for the boat.
The Alcan Lads and friends wanted to fish the wrecks after their last productive trip on the hard ground.
The best Codling was 9lb caught by Chris Charlton and the best ling was 8 ½ lb caught by Allan Dodds,
Darren Balls had a couple of nice Ling around the 7 ½ total catch for the day was 64 cod and Ling.
(see photos).
To sum up June 2011, the hard ground has out fished the wrecks with the best Cod of 13lb being caught by
Paul Nichol.
There have been quite a few 10lb cod off the hard ground but the usual stamp o
The wrecks have produced the average bigger size fish between 5lb to 7lb with the average of 5 to 7 fish to keep per person. The wreck fish have been nowhere near as clean and fresh as the ground fish and some of the wreck fish have been covered in red sores. -
